    31. Forests are important for many reasons. They provide biodegradable renewable resources. They also contribute to biosphere stability and are a habitat for wildlife. Furthermore, they are an important source of organic carbon and also foster medicinal conservation. In addition, they are also a cultural resource and a tourist attraction. Deforestration brings about several negative effects. It reduces the content of water in soil and groundwater and atmospheric moisture which in turn reduces soil cohesion and leads to flooding and landslides. Moreover, with deforestration, there is a greater ammount of carbon dioxide in the air contributing to global warming. Deforestration also leads to decreased evapotranspiration. Besides that, it destroys forest biotropes which are a major, irreplaceable source of new drugs. The supply of lumber resources is also reduced with deforestration.
